10 tips to organise and facilitate a stress-free move

Moving is usually something that people don't look forward to and don't enjoy. Just the thought of having to pack everything up and get ready for the move brings up a lot of emotions and feelings. This process can be very stressful for some people and the closer D-Day gets, the more stress and panic sets in. It doesn't matter if you are just moving to a neighboring community, within a county, or to another state. You always have to pack and then unpack everything and that takes a lot of effort, energy, patience and preparation.

There are many reasons why people move, whether it's to be closer to family or for a new job. The process can be tiring and stressful.

However, it is important to know that there are things you should do before you decide to move, during the move and even after you arrive in your new home. So before you start packing, read the following tips from Tidies on how to get organised and make packing easier to make moving less stressful.

1. Clean your home before you pack!

Before you start packing, clear your home of any unwanted items, clutter, junk or furniture that won't find a place in your new home. You don't want to deal with packing and moving things you don't plan to keep. By purging early, you'll make the whole moving process easier. If you don't know how and where to start, you need to take it one step at a time. For example, start with shoes, clothes, drawer by drawer. And in this way, set yourself an achievable goal every day. In this way, you will sort out each thing and room in a nice gradual way.

Now that you've sorted through all your stuff, you need to find a place to put what you no longer need. Put three boxes in your room: Donate, Sell, Toss. Sell, donate your things you no longer love or need. You don't even know who you're brightening someone's day.

2. Prepare packing material, boxes and everything needed for packing.

One of the tasks you will need to do before you start packing is to prepare all the tools and things you need for packing, including moving boxes and boxes. This is a very important step and will make packing much easier.

Here's a list of things you need:

  • Moving boxes
  • Plastic boxes
  • High boxes for clothing
  • Fixed bags
  • Tags
  • Colored markers
  • Scissors
  • Bubble wrap
  • Stretch film
  • Adhesive tape
  • Eska tapes

3. Labels and markings.

All boxes and crates must be labelled. Not only what is in them, but also which room the box should go to when you move in. Whether you are moving things yourself or with the help of a removal company, everyone will know which room to put what in. This will greatly simplify the whole process. Labels and box markings must be clearly visible. Label from two sides, front and side, never from the top. This is because when the boxes are stacked on top of each other, the labelling is not visible. It is a good idea to use a different colour (or markers) for each room, for example: kitchen red, bedroom blue, children's room green, etc. If there is anything delicate and fragile in the boxes, it needs to be carefully and visibly marked.

4. Packing of clothes.

It's a good idea to use tall clothes boxes to pack clothes on hangers. Simply hang the hangers there and store them in your wardrobe in your new home. You don't have to take the clothes down from the hangers, saving yourself a lot of time and energy. If you don't have tall clothes boxes, use waste bags. It's actually really simple - don't bother hanging clothes off hangers or storing them in boxes. Just grab a garbage bag and flip it upside down, make a small hole at the bottom, and slip the hanger arm through the hole. Pull the bag over your clothes and tie it up. It's a really quick and easy way to pack and unpack clothes. As for clothes that you have in drawers or on shelves, it's a good idea to "pre-organize" them. Store your clothes vertically in boxes rather than drawers. In a new home, you take a whole row of clothes and simply put them in a drawer - and that's it, you're tidy and organised. You don't have to spend time folding clothes.

5. How about books?

Use your luggage! Don't let your bulky luggage be a total waste of space during the transfer. Rolling luggage is great for heavy items (think books!), and it means one less box you have to use. Pack your suitcases as full as possible and use their capacity efficiently

6. Documents

Important documents and papers should be given special attention so that nothing is lost or forgotten. Again, I recommend that you go through your documents thoroughly before moving, sort through them and organise them so that you can keep track of them and know what you have where. Take the time to carefully sort and organise your important belongings. It really is worth it. At Tidies, we call organized documents "peace of mind." Divide your documents into categories, store them in folders, binders, boxes and label them carefully. They'll be neatly and beautifully stored in their new home.

7. Emergency box - Priority.

When packing and moving, it's important to make everything as easy as possible. That's why you need to think about the first days in your new home. It should contain all the personal items and essentials you might need for the next few days after the move - toiletries, toiletries, cosmetics, clothes, medicines, everything you need for the children and animals, etc. Label it with special tape (at Tidies we mark Priorities with a red label) or paper so it's easy to find. Make sure it's the first thing you unpack. That way you don't have to stress about trying to track things down on the first night, and you avoid lots of trips to the store for essentials. It is very important that when loading into the moving truck, the Emergency boxes go in last and at the unloading point, they go out first.

Tip: our clients inspire us. Andrejka came up with a great idea: to order everything you need in the store, have it packed and sent home, and then move it right away. That's how she figured it out so she wouldn't have to go shopping and stress unnecessarily after moving in. Thanks for the tip on how to make moving easier.

8. Spending of stocks.

Surely you have a certain stock of food, groceries, and other necessities at home. Before you move, buy only the essentials. Everything else, try to use up and replace so you have even less to pack. There is no need to move things that you can buy in your new home.

9. Discharge.

If you've already moved in and all your belongings are folded in the appropriate rooms according to the labels, it's time to start unpacking. Before you start unloading the kitchen, I recommend you take your time. As soon as you've unpacked the coffee machine and made yourself a delicious cup of coffee, it's a good idea to reach into the Express Box. I recommend preparing the things you need for the first night and for bedtime, especially if you have small children. They need to have everything ready first. Prepare a bed to sleep in plus pyjamas, clothes for the next day, toiletries, hygiene items so you have everything you need to hand, just as you are used to. Then everything goes smoothly and it's a piece of cake. This way, you don't have to stress about packing up that first night and it saves you a lot of time and energy.
