Why store food in jars

Find out why it's a good idea to transfer food from its original packaging into food jars to keep your pantry and kitchen clean and organized.

One of my favorite spaces to organize in my home is the pantry. I love it when we work with a client to create a system that is efficient, functional, and looks good to boot. Do you feel like your pantry is in need of a cleanse and general overhaul too? Don't know where to start or what food jars are best for you? Not sure? No worries, we've got it covered.

Benefits of storing food in jars

Storing food in transparent containers allows you to keep track of your pantry stock. When we're about to go to the store, a quick glance is all it takes to see what food needs to be replenished.

When you use airtight containers to store food, it stays fresher longer than in its original packaging.

The ability to get rid of excess packaging and instead use matching jars to suit your needs gives the pantry a neat and streamlined look, as the jars reduce visual clutter.

Another advantage of storing food in jars is that you save a lot of space.

The original packaging can be difficult to open and tends to tear easily, so it is advisable to use containers. This will save you work and you won't have to constantly clean up spilled flour from the shelves.

What are the disadvantages?

The disadvantage of using vats may be that:

  • It requires more time. By the time we get home from the store, it takes a few minutes to unload and load the food into the appropriate containers.
  • They also cost money. If we want really good quality jars that are going to serve us for a while, we have to invest heavily in them.
  • I still think that storing food in jars is extremely important for pantry organization. Yes, quality jars cost something, but the end result is worth it. It should be thought of as an investment in yourself.
How to get started?

Good. Now that you've decided that you want to have food in jars, how do you proceed?

1) MAKE A LIST OF EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KEEP IN THE VATS.

As with my organizing projects, we start by making a list. Take a look in your pantry and write down everything you want to put in a jar.

2) HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT JARS?

Choosing the right and high-quality jars is very important, because we want them to serve us for some time and they must also meet our requirements regarding their contents, practicality and, of course, quality.

As far as the availability of food jars on our market is concerned, the options are quite limited. This problem has motivated us to start selling containers that you can't normally buy in shops. So if you can't decide which jars to get, I recommend OXO POP and Emsa Optima. Both brands are popular among professional organizers for their high quality and maximum practicality.

OXO POP

The big advantage is that they are airtight and space-saving. The design of the OXO POP Good Grips containers ensures that dry food stays fresh and kitchen cupboards stay organised.

The ingredients are BPA-free and the jars are dishwasher safe. They are also stackable with all POP containers and can be individually removed to fit any space. And as a bonus, they have fantastic accessories.

Emsa Optima

Optimal for storage in drawers or pull-out containers. The advantage is the transparent lid, through which the contents can be seen. They are safe and perfectly protected against moisture and pests.

They also do not contain BPA or other harmful substances.

3) TIME FOR LABELS. LABEL YOUR JARS

Because we're taking food out of its original packaging, we'll probably need some sort of label so we don't accidentally mix baking powder and baking soda or something like that. And, of course, to help us navigate it.

Signage is essential to maintain the space, especially if more than one person is occupying the space. It is important to ensure that everyone is on the same wavelength, not only so they know where to find what, but also where to return it. It is also very important to stick an expiry date label.

4) PUT THE CONTAINERS ON THE SHELVES AND ENJOY

And now the most beautiful part of the whole organization process: when you have all the food in the boxes labeled, it's time to put everything back in the pantry and admire your work.

Food storage jars are a boon, especially if you have limited pantry space. Organizing leads to a healthier and cleaner kitchen, and cooking will be a whole lot easier if you keep things in order. No longer will you have to search diligently for ingredients all over the cupboards.
